Pulau Tioman offers the usual range of beachside activities. Other than swimming and relaxing on the sand under the tropical sun, visitors and tourists can also engage in light water sports and snorkelling. The calm waters and inviting weather make it a pleasure for friends and families to enjoy their holiday with these activities. You can also try your hand at fishing, whether by the docks for squid or heading out to deep sea for game fish.
Water Sports
While Tioman is a gazetted marine park, light water sport activities are allowed. These include boating, catamaran sailing and wind surfing. Jet skis, however, can sometimes be seen skimming across the waters, which is actually a banned activity in marine park areas in order to protect coral reefs, but Tioman is quite lax in enforcement. During the monsoon months, the large waves provide great fun for surf boarding with rain and thunder.
Snorkelling
Snorkelling can be done from the beach at most villages in Tioman. Most chalet and resort operators often provide their own snorkelling facilities or areas by the beach for guests to view the underwater life and coral reefs, include masks with tubes and flippers for rent or free. Salang offers snorkelling around Coral Island with a short boat ride, while the Marine Park at the northern end of Tekek is another popular place.
Fishing
Fishing is a popular pastime among the locals that live on Tioman, especially during the monsoon months, despite the island being a protected marine park. This is because there is not much else to do and few visitors or tourists come to stay on the island, which means most businesses and resorts are closed. However, at other times, visitors and tourists are invited to try their hand at fishing from the docks or beach using rods and reels. Squid fishing seems to be very popular at the jetties. Fishing equipment can be rented from most chalets and resorts. On the other hand, if you're a serious angler, you can charter a boat that will head out to deeper waters for some big game fish.
Golf
Golf is a leisure pursuit that's only available in the Berjaya Tioman Beach and Spa Resort. This hotel has a beautiful 18-hole course spread out along a 3 km stretch of road that leads from the southern end of Kampung Tekek to the end of Lalang Beach. Avid golfers can enjoy a full range of facilities including buggies, caddies and equipment rental. The golf course is only open to guests who stay in the Berjaya Tioman Resort or those who have a membership with Berjaya's Vacation Club. The golf course itself is a piece of beautiful, though unnatural, landscape with plenty of trees for cover and the backdrop of Tioman's rugged hills and mountains.
