Pulau Tioman is filled with the wonders of nature that invite exploration from adventurous visitors. Large granite boulders and karst formations that dot the island landscape provide awesome spectacles to behold. The coastal jungles and hilly dipterocarp rainforest which covers Tioman support a diverse range of ecosystems. Many new species of wildlife have been described from here over the last several years, adding to the plethora of mammals, snakes, lizards, frogs, birds and fish found living among the rivers, jungles and mountain tops of Tioman.
Jungle Trekking
Jungle trekking is a great activity for nature lovers and adventure seekers. There are several established forest trails running through the villages on the west coast of Tioman, and a cross-island trail which leads to Kampung Juara on the east side. These trails range from light to moderate intensity, and they can easily be found on tourist maps. Be aware that most maps are not to scale, and the trails are really much further than they look.
An easy 30 minute hike through the coastal forest can be found from the end of Berjaya Tioman Resort in Tekek which leads to Kampung Paya in the south. It starts with a pleasant walk on the beach through an abandoned turtle sanctuary before climbing a hilly cape and then descending down to Paya Village. From Ayer Batang, a jungle trail starts at the northern end which will take you past Panuba Bay (30 minutes), Monkey Beach (1 hour-and-a-half) and end in Salang Beach (2-3 hours). Then there's the popular cross island jungle trail from Tekek which starts at the mosque that leads to Juara. After about an hour of trekking over a hill through lush forest, the trail will cut out to the new Tekek- Juara gravel road. Finally, there may be a hidden trail between Kampung Genting that leads to Mukut. In Mukut, visitors can hike on a 45 minute trail to the famous Asah Waterfalls.
Mountain Climbing
Gunung Kajang is the highest mountain of any island off Peninsular Malaysia's coast. Standing at 1038 meters high, this peak is located in the center south of Tioman, just above Kampung Paya. The trail starts from Paya but ends about one-third of the way before the summit, so you need to find your own trail up. Another trail leads from Kampung Juara, but it is probably more obscure while taking a longer time due to distance.
Wildlife Watching
Tioman is a great place to find and observe wildlife while photographing them. For bird watching, Tioman is full of raptors, including migratory species along with many other species that occupy the vast terrain. Large mammals are absent from the island, but you can find Colugos, mouse deer, porcupines and bear cats (Binturong). Along some of the established jungle trails, you can even find shotgun shells, indicating hunting, probably for mouse deer as they seem to be abundant on Tioman. For those that love herpefauna, then Tioman has quite a wide range of snakes, lizards and frogs living among the tree tops, rivers and caves formed by boulders. Insects are plenty too.
