Pulau Tioman is a popular nesting site for Hawksbill and Green Turtles that come to lay their eggs anywhere between March till October each year. The main nesting sites are found in Teluk Baruk and Pasir Mentawak of Kampung Juara, with a more recently opened one in Teluk Sri Intan, after Tekek. Visitors and tourists to Tioman are invited to see the laying of eggs and their hatching in the turtle sanctuaries.

The Juara Turtle Project, which was established sine 2005 by one of the private Tioman resort operators who adopted a government run turtle sanctuary, has been running smoothly with the help of volunteers and attracting many visitors each year. The sanctuary is involved with the collection of eggs by laying turtles which are then incubated in their hatchery.
The sanctuary places the eggs in fenced up enclosures to protect them from natural and human predators. Upon hatching, the babies are returned to the sea, and hopefully, return to Tioman as nesting adults. This turtle sanctuary also has a permanent resident in the form of a blind green turtle kept in a concrete tank. Located at the southern end of Juara, entrance is free. |
